Can Form I-9 Verification Be Completed Remotely?

Can I-9 Verification be completed remotely or online?

In certain circumstances, yes. However, not every employer is eligible to complete Form I-9 document examination remotely.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security permits qualifying employers to use an authorized alternative procedure for remote examination of Form I-9 documents. When that procedure is used, the employer must meet the applicable eligibility and procedural requirements.

The remote process includes examination of the employee's documentation and a live video interaction with the employee. The employer must also follow applicable document-copy and retention requirements and indicate on Form I-9 that the DHS-authorized alternative procedure was used. E-Verify

If the employer is not eligible to use the DHS alternative procedure, the employee's original documents must be physically examined by the employer or an Authorized Representative designated to act on the employer's behalf. USCIS
