iPen vs. RON: What's the Difference?

How does In-Person Notarization (iPen) differ from Remote Online Notarization (RON)?

The primary difference between In-Person Electronic Notarization (iPen) and Remote Online Notarization (RON) is whether the signer and Notary are physically together.

iPen (In-Person Electronic Notarization):

The signer and Notary are physically present together in the same location. The document is signed and notarized electronically rather than on paper.

RON (Remote Online Notarization):
The signer and Notary are in separate locations and communicate through an approved live audio-video platform. The document is signed and notarized electronically, and the signer must complete the applicable online identity-verification requirements.

Both options use electronic documents, but iPen is still an in-person notarization, while RON is performed remotely.

Before choosing either option, confirm that the receiving party will accept an electronically signed and notarized document.
