Can a Florida Notary Just Sign Our Marriage License?

Can a Florida notary just sign and stamp our marriage license?

No. A Florida Notary Public who completes the marriage portion of your license is acting as your wedding officiant and solemnizing the marriage. It is not simply a matter of notarizing, signing, or stamping the marriage license.

At B. Elise Notary Services, even our simplest elopement ceremony includes a brief ceremony in which both individuals personally participate and clearly express their consent to marry.

The ceremony can be very simple and does not require elaborate vows, rings, or a traditional wedding ceremony unless you want those elements included.

During a simple ceremony, we will:

  1. Review the marriage license and confirm the couple's identities.
  2. Conduct a brief ceremony and obtain each person's verbal consent to the marriage.
  3. Pronounce the couple married.
  4. Complete the officiant portion of the marriage license.
  5. Provide instructions for the completed license to be returned for recording.

Your Florida marriage license must also still be valid on the date of the ceremony. Florida marriage licenses generally expire 60 days after issuance.

So if you're looking for a quick “sign and go” option, we can absolutely keep your ceremony short and simple—but there will still be an actual marriage ceremony.
