Can I Get a VIN Verification if My Car Battery Is Dead?

What if my car battery is dead or missing?

Your vehicle does not necessarily need to be running for a VIN Verification, but it must be accessible so the required vehicle information can be physically inspected.

If your vehicle has an electronic odometer, a dead or missing battery may prevent the current mileage from displaying. When an odometer reading is required for your transaction, this may prevent the applicable portion of the paperwork from being completed at the appointment. Florida’s HSMV 82042 includes both a physical VIN inspection and an odometer declaration. Florida Highway Safety

Before your appointment, please make sure:

  • The VIN is accessible and readable.
  • The vehicle can be safely accessed for inspection.
  • If the vehicle has an electronic odometer, there is enough battery power for the mileage to display when required.

If the vehicle is inoperable, has a dead or missing battery, or the odometer cannot be displayed, please let us know before scheduling so we can determine whether the appointment can be completed as planned.

One extra nuance worth preserving: not every vehicle transaction requires an odometer declaration. Florida forms identify exemptions based on factors such as vehicle age and certain vehicle types. Florida Highway Safety
