What If My ID Is More Than Five Years Old for a Florida Notary?

What if my ID was issued more than five years ago?

For an in-person Florida notarization, an acceptable identification document must generally be current or have been issued within the past five years and meet the other requirements established by Florida law. Online Sunshine

If your identification does not meet these requirements, Florida law may allow your identity to be established through credible witnesses, but only when specific statutory requirements are met.

Florida permits either:

  • One credible witness who is personally known to the Notary Public, or
  • Two credible witnesses whose identities are established through satisfactory evidence.

The credible witness or witnesses must personally know the signer and must swear, among other things, that the signer is the person named in the document, that it would be very difficult or impossible for the signer to obtain another acceptable form of identification, that the signer does not possess one of the identification documents permitted by Florida law, and that the witnesses have no financial interest in and are not parties to the underlying transaction. Because credible-witness identification has specific legal requirements, please contact us before scheduling your appointment if you do not have an acceptable form of identification.

Different identification requirements apply to Remote Online Notarization (RON).
